Help – I’m Addicted to Junk Food!

Posted November 19, 2020 by Bellin Health

Picture this: You open a bag of your favorite potato chips with the intention of only having a few. But the next thing you know, half the bag is gone.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Most of us have succumbed to a food craving at some point or another. It could be salty chips, decadent chocolate, or creamy ice cream – when a favorite food crosses your mind, it’s hard to think about anything else. Even worse, the more aware you are about avoiding something, the more difficult it is to pass up.

Here’s some food for thought: You can actually become addicted to certain types of food. This kind of addiction often leads to overeating – usually unhealthy foods – which can cause obesity and an increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancer.

Psychology plays a role in how addictive we find certain foods. But chemicals also factor in. Food companies pay big bucks for scientists to engineer the taste, feel, smell and even the sound products make to trigger our neurological pleasure centers. The result: Highly caloric and fattening foods that are nearly impossible to put down.

Below is a list of the top ten addictive foods. Try challenging yourself and pick three items from the list to avoid eating for 30 days. After your 30 days are up, you’ll feel better physically and mentally and be in a better position to control how much you eat of these foods.

  • White Pasta
  • Donuts/Cake
  • White Bread
  • Chips
  • Cookies
  • Milk Chocolate
  • French Fries
  • Candy
  • Ice Cream
  • Soda
